Amphitrite was the granddaughter of the Titan Ocean (Ocean was the river that encircled the
Earth), daughter of Nereus (the Old Man of the Sea) and Doris, and wife of Poseidon. She had
49 other sisters, the lovely nymphs of the Sea, including Thetis, and the story goes that Poseidon
loved Thetis first and wanted to marry her. However, when he heard a prophecy that Thetis's son
would be greater than the father, he turned his attentions to Amphitrite, who promptly hid to
avoid marriage. A dolphin convinced her of the marriage and Triton, the trumpeter of the sea,
is their son. Thetis went on to marry King Peleus, neglected to invite Eris to the marriage
banquet and sowed the seeds for the Trojan War. In true Greek fashion, the prophecy was true:
Achilles was the son of Thetis and what's his name. Chalcedony and opal are stones of
creativity and inner fire and the colors of water, so Amphitrite seems a nice mythological
representative. Stones are set in sterling silver by the talented artisans of SilverRocks and
