The rich brown color of smoky quartz results from free silicone within the silicon dioxide crystalline structure; the silicone can be freed by natural radiation or helped along by radiation treatment in a lab. The checkerboard gem cut resembles the square pattern of the game board and lately it's been applied to some lovely beads, such as these, rather than just the traditional cushion shaped gemstone for a setting. The deep brown color said "coffee!" and this necklace is definitely a perk for the morning routine! Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The sterling silver chain is made of large links that can easily be bent or distorted with determined tugging. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.
