The Death's-Head Hawkmoth gets its name from the skull-like mark on its thorax. This
marking led many to view the moth as an ill omen -- a device of evil spirits even --
and its large size (3"-5") and tendency to squeak when disturbed can be alarming.
Yet, hawk moths are not harbingers of death; instead, they are experts at finding sweet-smelling flowers after dark,
