As the sun sinks low on the horizon, an orange glow fills the sky and shadows lengthen. The sky
pales to grey, then the dark of night settles. In summer, this time of day-to-night is welcome, as one
escapes the heat of day and savors the comfort of outdoors. In winter, dusk
feels differently; the days are already short and the advancing dark and cold chase people from the
outdoors inward. The word "dusk" is likely from the Old English
"dox" meaning "dark or swarthy". In the 1200s, the word switched from "dox"
to "dosk", then in Middle English "duske". The orange-to-gray hues of dusk are
well represented by the feldspar moonstone, with its lustrous milky shine (called andularescence),
and grey aventurine. Moonstone is an orthoclase feldspar, on the potassium-bearing side of the
alkali feldspar group, not to be confused with oligoclase sodium-bearing feldspars like rainbow moonstone,
labradorite and sunstone, whose luster is described more by flashes of light (schiller effect). Feldspars
are relatively robust stones (Mohs hardness of 6) but softer than quartz and other brilliant gemstones.
