The bright, saturated colors of the apatite and pink tourmaline say "happy" and they are enough to prod a more cheerful state of mind. The apatite gemstones are clear and refreshing like an alpine lake or a Caribbean beach, and the pink tourmaline chips are warm and sweet like a hug or cotton candy. Alone each necklace is a fine spot of color to an outfit, but together they are a friendly kick to the senses, a lift out of the doldrums. Life is so often difficult, why not make a choice to don a little color and an upbeat frame of mind? Apatite is a calcium phosphate whose name is derived from the Greek for "deceit" because it can resemble so many other beautiful - and alas, harder - gemstones like aquamarine, amethyst and tourmaline. Its softer nature (Mohs hardness 5) means that apatite is more likely to chip or break when cut into jewelry components. The apatite gemstone beads in this necklace are unusual in that they are faceted teardrops; most apatite beads are rondelles or other smaller, rougher shapes. Their clarity is also unusual. Tourmaline is one of the borosilicate family (silica mixed with boric oxide) with Sally silica tetrahedra connected in cylindrical rings. The mineral is abundant, but gem quality tourmaline is only found in pegmatites (igneous rocks from water-rich magma that form large crystals). Tourmaline shows terrific range of color, from deep black and forest green to pale pink and yellow. Some of the most valuable specimens are "watermelon" tourmaline which show pink tourmaline ringed with green in the same stone. Pink or rubellite tourmaline, such as the chips in this necklace, is a less common variety.

Length: necklaces - 19"

Materials:

  • faceted apatite gemstone beads
  • pink tourmaline chips
  • sterling silver beads
  • Japanese glass seedbeads
  • sterling silver rollo chain and S-hook clasp
  • Soft Flex moderate duty nylon coated stainless steel cord (30 lb. load test)
  • Soft Touch light duty nylon coated stainless steel cord (10 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. The apatite beads required a narrower diameter beading cord so greater care should be taken to avoid snags and other sharp pulls. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The narrower diameter beading cord is more vulnerable to hard tugs and pulls so it's recommended to keep this out of reach. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

Worn alone, each necklace is 19" and works well with higher to moderate necklines like boatnecks, crewnecks, scoop necks and V-necks. Each necklace is lightweight and should be worn flat; they will not drape well over tops with volume, like ruffles and such. When wrapped around each other and worn together, the length is a bit shorter, closer to 18", and they look great under a blazer or with a summery dress.
