In Greek mythology, Hippolyta was the queen of the Amazons, the name given
to the women warriors of ancient Scythia and Sarmatia. In the past, Amazons were
considered mythical, but accounts by Herodotus and discoveries of battle-scarred
female skeletons suggest otherwise. Nevertheless, the tale of Hercules' labor to relieve
Hippolyta of her magical girdle is the stuff of myth. The girdle was a gift from Ares and
gave superhuman strength to the wearer. The Brazilian amazonite gemstone tucked within
an elegant bronze pendant is not a magical girdle, but it is a beautiful feature in this
18" necklace of multiple beading cord secured with a slim, silver torsion clasp. The pendant
slides smoothly on a patterned vermeil tube.
