The fresh yellow green peridot in this necklace is as bright and full of promise as new growth following a long dry spell or the cold dark of winter. Peridot is the gemstone variety of the mineral olivine, a nesosilicate in which Sally the Silica tetrahedra is found in "islands" rather than connected structures within the lattice. Slices of meteorites show translucent yellow green windows of olivine / peridot, and it's likely a major component of the earth's upper mantle and rocky material of the solar system. Holding peridot is holding the stuff of our planet, the moon and beyond. Emily Dickinson called hope the thing with feathers, but if a less transient metaphor is needed, then hope as a beautiful green stone that transcends our planet and has existed for billions of years isn't so bad either. The gemstones are strung with hand-knotted silk thread which creates incredible fluidity in this mid-length 20" necklace.

Length: necklaces - 20" (hope) and 30" (joy)

Materials:

  • hope: peridot gemstone beads
  • hope: sterling silver links
  • joy: tourmaline gemstone beads
  • both: sterling silver hook & eye clasps
  • both: knotted silk thread

Care & cleaning: Jewelry items using knotted silk thread between stones have superior drape but silk thread can deteriorate over time; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or stressing thread. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The bead components and silk thread are quite strong, but silk thread can be stretched with sustained hard pulls so it's recommended to keep these out of the reach of young hands. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

Worn alone, the Hope peridot necklace is a smaller scale 20" mid-length item that works well with most casual tops and shells. It's long enough to be worn with turtlenecks and outside collared shirts and it's an easygoing addition to an evening out. When worn with the Joy necklace, the necklaces take on a flapperesque appearance with long swinging style over a shift dress. It can also be wrapped multiple times for a terrific bracelet (see necklets for examples).
