The porcelain bead in this 17" necklace of feldspar, wood, and
copper beads has coloring and pattern like that used by artist
Gustav Klimt in such paintings as "The Kiss." Feldspar is
an aluminosilicate mineral that is abundant and widespread and one
of the major constituents of igneous rocks like granite. The orange-pink
color is these stones is common of orthoclase feldspar containing
potassium. Clay-based beads such as the beautifully glazed bead in
this necklace may be porcelain or ceramic. Porcelain beads such as this
one are formed from more refined clay that is fired to higher
temperatures in the kiln, leading to a more glass-like material
as feldspar base melts. The clasp is a large copper toggle for ease of
fastening.
