Carved jet become popular as the jewelry of mourning in the mid-1800s, following the deaths of
King George IV in 1830 and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the husband and
consort of Queen Victoria, in 1861. This 18" sterling silver chain necklace features
a simple carved natural jet oval pendant, in the spirit of Victorian mourning though without the
ornate style. The bead is 11mm x 15mm with a hand carved abstract design, and like all jet,
it's lightweight for its size. Like other coal, jet formed from the decomposition of wood of trees
of the family Araucariaceae, but it lacks the high concentration of carbon and hydrocarbons
as fuel grade coal.
The necklace has two small peridot gemstones near the small but strong magnetic clasp
for easy fastening.
