The Emancipation Oak in Hampton, Virginia is an incredible 98 feet in diameter with sprawling, twisting
limbs. It is one of the National Geographic Society's 10 Great Trees of the World, and it was under
this oak tree that the African American community of the Virginia peninsula heard Lincoln's
Emancipation Proclaimation read, hence the name of the tree. The Bowthorpe Oak in England is over
1000 years old and up to 20 people can sit inside the massive hollowed interior. The Seven Sisters Oak
in Louisiana is the largest certified southern live oak and estimated to be up to 1500 years old
with circumference of close to 40 feet. Oak trees - especially the large, older trees - have a presence
that transcends the everyday; we stop and stare. North America and China have the greatest diversity in oak
species, and in 2004, Congress passed legislation designating the oak as America's National Tree, joining
a number of other countries like France, Germany, Poland and Jordan whose national tree is the oak.
The painted oak in this pendant is a small giclee print on canvas from a California artist's painting.
The print is mounted in a wooden frame, and this is hung from a beautiful pair of sterling silver
cords, one coated in 14kt rose gold and one not.
