The colors and shapes of coral reefs and surrounding shallow waters are represented by rough watermelon tourmaline nuggets and smooth blue-green kyanite sticks. Among the tourmaline varieties, "watermelon"l tourmaline is among the most desirable because of the striking color banding from pink center to green edge. The rough nuggets in the Reef necklace are more opaque than gem quality watermelon tourmaline but the color banding is evident. Tourmaline is a hard borosilicate (silica mixed with boric oxide) with Sally the Silica tetrahedra arranged in cyclic rings. It is an abundant mineral that forms in or near igneous rock. Kyanite is an unusual blue to blue-green stone that forms in long blades in areas of clay-rich metamorphic rock. Its hardness depends on the axis; it is hard to fracture perpendicular to the long axis and easier parallel to the long axis. The kyanite graduated stones in the Shallows necklace show color that is more blue-green than blue, unusual for most kyanite jewelry components that are smaller and bluer. The combination of the two necklaces is a nice mix of blue-green color and more rustic, natural texture, and they may be connected together via the lobster clasps attached to links and S-hook or separate.

Length: necklaces - 17" and 21"

Materials:

  • rough watermelon tourmaline nuggets
  • sterling silver beads
  • sterling silver lobster clasp
  • kyanite stick drops
  • Czech glass beads
  • sterling silver links and S-hook clasp
  • Soft Flex moderate duty nylon coated stainless steel cord (30 lb. load test)

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

Worn together or apart, the necklace components and beading cord should be robust to toddler tugs and pulls. Kyanite is the softer material, and it may chip or break with hard impacts or if it's stepped on. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.

Worn alone, each necklace is a nice mid-length (17" or 21"); and works well with higher to moderate necklines like boatnecks, crewnecks, scoop necks and V-necks. The Shallows kyanite necklace is long enough to pair with a turtleneck as well. The necklaces are moderate weight so they will drape well over ruffles or other features in a lightweight fabric. When worn together, they take more volume and look best paired with simple shells or dress fronts.
