The story of mermaids begins in Assyria with Atargatis and moves through Greek mythology
with the Nereids, who were offspring of Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea, and Doris, granddaughter
of earth and sky. Amphitrite was one of these Nereids, and she married Poseidon, the son
of Titans Cronos and Rhea, and bore Triton, who eventually inherited the sea. Mermaids are
often depicted as beautiful and treacherous, luring men to their doom. Scottish and Irish
folklore talk of women with shape-changing power who inter-marry but leave the husbands that
walk in on them bathing. Melusine is a European fresh-water spirit often shown with wings or two tales,
like in the Starbucks logo, who was the daughter of a fairy and a king. Like husbands in tales from the
northern islands, the king tragically walked in on his wife while bathing so she took Melusine
and her two sisters to Avalon, never to return. Mermaid wisdom channels the sea, imagination and
elusive transformative power, and this is reflected in the Green Girl Studios pewter pendant
of a magical mermaid. The pendant rests between beautiful blue handcrafted lampwork glass
beads by artisans of Unicorne Beads. This 17" necklace combines land and sea - wood and
glass - with a fluid silver-plate fishtail chain and sterling silver toggle.
