Transpiration in plants is roughly like breathing and perspiring for us; water taken up through the roots is expelled as water vapor through stomata on the leaves. The stomata are pores that open and close to enable the diffusion of carbon dioxide within the leaf while water vapor escapes out. The transpiration cools the plant as well as changing the osmotic pressure within the cells and transporting mineral nutrients from the roots to the shoots. Because of capillary action of the water, this hydraulic system of nutrient transport and pressure modulation is efficient, though the cost is the water itself in the form of water vapor (which is why plants wilt without it!). The combination of light green emerald and deep blue sapphire made me think of the ongoing exchange between water and leaf. Most strands of emeralds are a deeper green, but I found the mix of lighter stones adds lightness and airiness to the piece. Emerald is a beryl, a cyclosilicate in which Sally Silica Tetrahedra connects at corners, forming rings, and sapphire is a corundum, a close-packed oxide with metal or semi-metal atoms and lacking Sally; though different in composition, both gemstones are hard (Mohs hardness of 8+) and treasured for their beauty and resilience.

Care & cleaning: Beading cord may be kinked or broken through hard jerks or severed through prolonged exposure to rough or sharp edges; store necklace flat when not in use to prevent stretching or kinking cord. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaners. Use a soft jewelry polishing cloth to clean tarnish appearing on silver.

The gemstones are quite hardy, and in part, it is their hardness that contributes to the delicate nature of the necklace: the drilled holes are small, requiring a narrow diameter beading wire that is strong and flexible, but not as robust to hard tugs and pulls. For this reason, it's recommended to keep out of reach of young hands. As with all beaded jewelry: do not let young toddlers chew on it.
